Iran Hardens Stance Against US Amid Economic Pressure and Military Tensions

A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Iran's leadership has concluded it must adopt a tougher stance against the United States to establish leverage before engaging in any meaningful negotiations with President Donald Trump. This shift follows Tehran's assessment that previous attempts at flexibility only increased pressure from Washington, prompting a more aggressive rhetoric and actions, including threats to block the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and disrupt energy infrastructure in the Gulf region.

An informed Gulf source indicated that Iran believes escalating pressure will eventually force Trump to concede, as Tehran views US demands as attempts to exploit perceived Iranian weakness. Iran is currently blocking the Strait of Hormuz and threatening further disruptions, aiming to leverage economic pressure rather than provoke a broad military conflict. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards reportedly believe they can gain more by intensifying the confrontation.

Meanwhile, Reuters reported that the US military is facing a significant shortage of long-range ground-to-ground missiles, including ATACMS and the newer PrSM missiles, having used nearly all of its stockpile in conflicts involving Iran. This depletion raises concerns about US readiness for future conflicts, especially against major powers like Russia and China. Although the US Central Command has replenished some missile stocks from other global sources, the overall shortage could undermine deterrence capabilities.

In response, the White House, via President Trump, asserted that the US possesses more ammunition than any other country and is ramping up production and upgrades to meet demand. The ongoing tensions highlight the strategic and military challenges both nations face amid escalating economic and geopolitical pressures.
