Artist Reveals Netanyahu's Reaction to Yonatan Netanyahu Statue in Entebbe

Artist Itay Zlait, who sculpted the monument honoring Yonatan Netanyahu at Entebbe Airport, shared insights into the project's origins and the messages he received from the Netanyahu family. Zlait explained that he was approached for the project due to his experience with similar works and that he traveled to Uganda about ten months ago to connect with the site, including the control tower near where Yonatan Netanyahu fell during the 1976 rescue operation. He aimed to capture the moment just before the assault in his sculpture. Zlait also noted that he saw Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu share the statue publicly but did not observe any credit given for the artwork.

The monument was unveiled as a tribute to Lt. Col. Yonatan Netanyahu, the courageous commander of the Israeli rescue force during Operation Entebbe on July 4, 1976. The Ugandan Chief of Staff emphasized that the statue symbolizes not only Netanyahu's bravery and sacrifice but also the values of courage, duty, and selfless service. He highlighted that such memorials preserve memory, teach history, and inspire future generations.

Furthermore, the Ugandan official underscored the longstanding friendship and practical cooperation between Uganda and Israel, which extends well beyond the events of 1976. Both countries remain committed to deepening their bilateral relations. The statue stands as a testament to these enduring ties and the heroic legacy of Yonatan Netanyahu.
