Israeli Teen Charged with Assaulting Mother Over Internet and Pocket Money Disputes

An 18-year-old from a community in the Jezreel Valley has been indicted for repeatedly assaulting his mother, including incidents triggered by internet outages and refusal to give him pocket money. The indictment was filed on Tuesday at Nazareth Magistrate's Court by Chief Inspector Maya Hashiloni from the Northern Police District. According to the indictment, the youth is charged with threats and causing serious bodily harm to his mother on multiple occasions.

On July 25, police received a report from a 54-year-old woman who said her son had attacked her, causing severe injuries before fleeing the home. Police searched for the suspect, who returned hours later and was arrested. Investigators took detailed statements from the mother and witnesses. When confronted, the son threatened to harm his mother further.

Sergeant Major Mohassen Dagesh, a youth investigator with the Jezreel Valley police, described several violent episodes. In one, the son became angry over an internet malfunction, grabbed his mother’s right hand tightly, and pulled her forcefully. Two days later, after she refused to give him pocket money, he punched her in the shoulder and back, causing intense pain.

This is not the first time the youth has been accused of violence against his mother. Over a year ago, he was charged with assaulting her and causing serious head injuries, also related to money disputes. Due to the repeated violent behavior, police requested an extension of his detention to protect the mother and family.

The defendant’s public defender, attorney Sari Houri, stated that the youth has special needs and requires treatment and rehabilitation rather than punishment. He described the young man as generally quiet and normative but facing complex challenges, and called for his release to an appropriate rehabilitative framework.
