Israeli Police Arrest Suspect in Ashdod Extortion Scheme Targeting Contractors

Israeli police have arrested a resident of Hura on suspicion of extorting protection money from contractors working on construction sites in Ashdod. The suspect allegedly demanded payments under the guise of security services, but the funds were in fact protection fees. The arrest followed raids conducted by the Protection Unit South, National Guard fighters, counter-terrorism forces, and Southern District police on homes and construction sites in Hura and Ashdod.

During the raids, authorities seized vehicles, mobile phones, a computer, and documents, which are now under investigation. An employee of the security company involved was also detained for questioning. The suspect was brought before Beersheba Magistrate's Court, which extended his detention until August 6, 2026.

Police have urged contractors, business owners, and anyone who believes they have been pressured to pay protection money to report to the police or call emergency number 100. This operation is part of a broader crackdown that has resulted in hundreds of indictments in 2026 aimed at combating the extortion phenomenon in Israel.
