Trump Announces Start of Negotiations with Iran Amid Gulf States' Calls to Avoid Military Strike

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday night aboard Air Force One that negotiations with Iran would begin later that afternoon. He expressed willingness to engage in talks to save lives, stating, "We are starting talks today and will see if it is real. I would be happy to do it, to save many lives." Trump also revealed that Gulf states including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Iran requested to halt a planned military strike. "We were supposed to go ahead, but when allies ask to cancel, you have to say 'let's see,'" he said.

Trump mentioned that there is an immediate deal on the table concerning the Strait of Hormuz, but opinions differ within his administration. "Some want us to just go and finish it, others do not want me to do that," he explained. When asked about a deadline, Trump responded, "We will just see what happens, we are ready to move at any moment. Do I prefer a deal? I do not want to kill people."

Regarding his conversation with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump said he asked the prince about his preference. The prince reportedly favored a diplomatic deal, citing concerns about the consequences of strikes, including potential refugee influxes and disasters affecting their country. Trump emphasized the risks of military action and the preference for a peaceful resolution.
