Netanyahu Says Non-Torah Learners Will Be Drafted or Imprisoned After Failed Draft Law

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated in a closed-door meeting on Sunday that the current law freezing arrests of draft dodgers has failed and will not be reinstated in the next government. He emphasized that those who do not engage in Torah study will be required to enlist in the Israel Defense Forces or face imprisonment. Netanyahu described the draft freeze law as a temporary measure intended to reduce tensions and increase enlistment rates among the ultra-Orthodox community. However, he acknowledged that the law did not achieve its goals in practice. Following the upcoming elections, Netanyahu said a broad national government will be formed to immediately pass a comprehensive draft law that meets the needs of the IDF.
