Chef Assaf Granit Opens Italian Gelato Shop Despite Disliking Sweets
Israeli chef Assaf Granit, known for his culinary ventures and recent controversies involving alleged employee theft and outspoken remarks about the new season of MasterChef, is making headlines again with the opening of a new food establishment. Granit's latest project is an Italian gelateria named LICOUK, set to open in a few weeks on Rue Saint-Sauveur in Paris, near his restaurant "Shabour." The gelateria will serve authentic Italian gelato stored in traditional Pozzetti containers to maintain freshness and airy texture. Flavors will include pistachio, chocolate, and vanilla, with plans to introduce more playful tastes inspired by Jerusalem's culinary heritage.
This move is surprising given Granit's well-known aversion to sweet foods. In several interviews, including a morning show on Channel 13 before the launch of MasterChef Pastry, Granit openly declared his dislike for sweets and desserts, stating, "I hate sweet! I don't like sweet food, I don't like desserts," and that he neither enjoys preparing nor eating them. Despite this, he is expanding his culinary footprint internationally by opening new venues outside Israel, raising curiosity about his future projects and the direction of his brand.
LICOUK represents a notable addition to Granit's portfolio and a new chapter in his career, blending traditional Italian gelato craftsmanship with his unique culinary DNA. The shop's location in Paris highlights Granit's ongoing commitment to establishing Israeli culinary presence abroad.
