Bride Reflects on Wedding Dress Experience and Embracing Authenticity

Unlike many girls who dream of wearing a white wedding dress, the author never imagined herself in one. While other children pretended to be Disney princesses, she fantasized about being Superman. Although she dreamed of family and even thought about baby names as a child, the idea of a traditional wedding ceremony never appealed to her. When she and her future husband decided to marry, she insisted on a conventional, large wedding with all the typical elements, including an expensive designer white dress, despite his preference for a unique, smaller event.

In hindsight, she acknowledges that her husband was right and that adhering to societal expectations contributed to tension between them. Their eventual separation was due to deeper fundamental differences, not the wedding itself. The experience taught her how easy it is to lose one's inner voice when trying to conform to social norms. Years later, when facing her next major life decision, divorce, she chose to listen to her heart rather than societal pressures, even if it meant being seen as different.

She reflects on the frustration that the ability to break free from societal expectations often comes only with age. Many spend their twenties conforming to rituals and roles that don't fit them, only to realize later that these patterns are restrictive. Despite this, she does not regret her past choices, recognizing the genuine happiness she felt then. She now understands that the wedding dress was just one of many "dresses" she wore throughout life to fit in, and since embracing her true self, she feels much more comfortable and authentic.
