Trump Announces Historic Agreement to Fully Disarm Hamas in Gaza Strip

US President Donald Trump announced a diplomatic breakthrough overnight, declaring that a peace council has reached a historic agreement for the complete disarmament of Hamas and all armed groups in the Gaza Strip. In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump hailed the deal as a "monumental step toward lasting peace and security," emphasizing that the threats stemming from the October 7 attacks will not be allowed to reemerge.

Trump outlined that the agreement envisions Gaza being governed by a new Palestinian authority cooperating closely with the peace council to assist residents, while ensuring Israel’s security by preventing Gaza from serving as a base for terrorist attacks. The implementation will proceed in carefully planned stages, including Israeli military withdrawal and deployment of an international stabilization force alongside a new Palestinian police force to maintain safety for Gaza’s population and neighboring areas.

The president credited regional mediators Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, as well as his diplomatic team, for facilitating the breakthrough. He acknowledged the difficult context of the past year, marked by violent conflict, humanitarian crises, and hostages, but expressed optimism about the progress made.

Trump’s announcement followed reports that Hamas leadership sent a letter to the White House requesting a 15-year truce and expressing willingness to disarm in exchange for a long-term ceasefire, cessation of Israeli attacks, targeted killings, and troop withdrawals. Israeli officials rejected this proposal as a "spin" and inconsistent with the framework of Trump’s October peace plan, calling it a desperate attempt by Hamas to delay and avoid being declared in breach of the agreement, which could prompt renewed Israeli military action.

Separately, Israeli sources stated that Gaza was not discussed during a recent meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Trump. Israel insists on full disarmament of Hamas and complete demilitarization of Gaza as prerequisites for any process, and has submitted objections to the "15-point" plan through envoy Tony Blair. Israeli officials reaffirmed they will not cross their red lines in Gaza before Hamas is disarmed and the territory is demilitarized.
