Gabi Kanikovski Leads Ferencvaros Past Satu Limkin in Israeli Derby
On July 30, three Israeli footballers playing abroad competed in European qualifiers, with Gabi Kanikovski and Satu Limkin facing off in a notable Israeli derby. Both started for their respective teams, Ferencvaros from Hungary and Twente from the Netherlands, in the Europa League qualifiers. Despite playing over half the match with ten men after a red card to Romanes in the 36th minute, Ferencvaros secured a 3-4 aggregate victory over Twente, advancing to the next round.
Ferencvaros took the lead with a penalty by Ramakers in the 22nd minute and doubled it in the 50th minute through Joseph’s solo effort. Twente fought back late in the game, with goals from Wout Weghorst in the 82nd minute and Hasselink equalizing in the 86th minute. Limkin received a yellow card in the 61st minute and nearly scored in the 89th but missed.
Another Israeli player, Iham Shhada, appeared as a substitute in the Conference League qualifiers but his team, Velez Mostar from Bosnia, lost 3-0 to Dunajska Streda from Slovakia and was eliminated 4-0 on aggregate. This marked the conclusion of the European campaigns for the Israeli representatives that evening.
