Yair Lapid Threatens Defamation Lawsuit Against Channel 14 and Panelists

Yair Lapid, leader of the opposition in Israel, has sent legal warning letters to Channel 14 owner Yitzhak Mirilashvili and panelists Itamar Fleishman and Daniel Cohen over defamatory remarks made on the show "The Patriots." The letters, sent through Lapid's attorneys on Thursday, accuse Fleishman of calling Lapid "an aider of Nazis" during the program. Despite partial objections from one participant, the rest of the panel, including host Yinon Magal, did not reject the statement. Lapid's letter emphasizes that such remarks cross a "red line," especially given that Lapid is the son of a Holocaust survivor.

A separate letter to Daniel Cohen alleges he called Lapid a "Juden Nazi" and refused to retract the statement when asked during the broadcast. Lapid's legal team cites Israeli Supreme Court rulings that equate comparisons to Nazis or similar terms as serious defamation not protected by law. The letters demand a public apology on the next episode of "The Patriots" and that Fleishman and Cohen issue apologies in the wording specified by Lapid's lawyers. Failure to comply will result in defamation lawsuits.

In response, Fleishman challenged Lapid to sue him, expressing willingness to face legal action despite limited financial means. He stated that his family also suffered in the Holocaust and justified his remarks by accusing Lapid of irresponsibly promoting major antisemitic and neo-Nazi conspiracy theories from the U.S., asserting he would continue to speak out on television and in court if necessary.
