Man Arrested for Arson in Bat Yam After Bicycle Theft Sparks Anger

A 34-year-old resident of Bat Yam was arrested on suspicion of setting fire to a storage room in a residential building on Herzl Street following anger over the theft of his bicycle. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on July 21, 2026, when police received a report of the fire. Upon arrival, officers collected evidence and conducted an investigation.

The inquiry revealed that two suspects attempted to break into the storage room door. After failing to open it, one allegedly poured an accelerant on the door and ignited it. The arrested man was taken for questioning at the Bat Yam police station and subsequently detained. His detention has been extended multiple times by the court.

The police have linked him to charges including arson, attempted burglary, and conspiracy to commit a crime. Following the conclusion of the investigation, the prosecution submitted an indictment declaration, with formal charges expected to be filed in the coming days.
