IDF Soldiers Desert Base in Protest Over Removal of Veteran Privilege Symbols

A serious disciplinary incident occurred at the Shde Teiman base involving soldiers from the Givati Brigade's Sabra Battalion. The soldiers collectively abandoned their weapons and left the base without authorization following a dispute with their battalion commander. The conflict arose after the commander ordered the removal of metal plaques and signs that veteran soldiers had placed, which symbolized the unofficial "veteran youth" tradition granting senior soldiers privileges and exemptions from routine duties, often burdening younger soldiers. These plaques were deemed contrary to IDF regulations.

The IDF confirmed the event, stating that the soldiers left without permission after the commander's decision to remove signs linked to non-normative veteran traditions. The incident is under investigation and is considered inconsistent with the IDF's values and expectations of its soldiers. This breach of discipline comes amid a broader trend of declining order within combat units, attributed to nearly three years of continuous fighting and the ongoing election period.

In response, the Chief of Staff has ordered the creation of an official "Foundations Document" to be distributed to all commanders in the coming weeks.
