Israeli Woman and Partner Transform Lives by Embracing Foster Daughter from Troubled Past
Keren Shaul, 52, CEO of the nonprofit "Ofek" promoting young volunteers, shares her journey of forming a blended family in Moshav Hagor. Married to businessman Nir Shaul, they combined their five children and welcomed Tigi, a girl from the Hadassim boarding school with a traumatic background, into their home. Nir first encountered Tigi during a visit to Hadassim about seven years ago and felt compelled to help her, despite initial doubts about adding complexity to their newly blended family.
Tigi, 22, was born in Ethiopia and faced severe hardships including losing her mother as an infant, living in unstable conditions, and suffering abuse and neglect. She spent much of her childhood in various boarding schools and struggled with trust and trauma. When Keren and Nir offered to become her foster family, Tigi was initially withdrawn and mistrustful, often lying and isolating herself. Over time, with professional support and the couple’s unwavering commitment, she integrated into their family and eventually moved in permanently after finishing school.
Tigi’s father passed away shortly before she joined Keren and Nir’s home full-time, which triggered behavioral challenges that led to intensive therapy. Since returning home in 2023, she has become a central figure in the family and joined the family business, YTcom, where she was recognized as an outstanding employee. Keren describes Tigi as her daughter and emphasizes her mission to break the link between one’s origins and their potential for success.
Tigi expresses deep gratitude for her new family, calling Keren and Nir her parents and valuing the stability and love she has found. Despite her difficult past and struggles with substance abuse, she has rebuilt her life with their support and is determined to continue proving her resilience and success.
