Israeli Woman Becomes Single Mother After Breast Cancer Recovery, Prepares Legal Guardianship for Daughter

Niva Yahyav Alon, a 52-year-old architect and industrial designer from Kfar Saba, shares her journey of becoming a single mother after surviving breast cancer. Having never been in a relationship or considered motherhood, her diagnosis at age 39 forced her to deeply reflect on her life and desires. Despite no family history of breast cancer, persistent pain led her to insist on further testing, which confirmed her illness. She underwent nearly two years of treatment including surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, and biological therapy.

During this period, Niva explored her past and uncovered childhood sexual abuse, which helped her understand her lifelong avoidance of relationships. When doctors offered fertility preservation before chemotherapy, she chose to freeze embryos using donor sperm, although she initially did not plan to have children. Three years later, she decided to pursue motherhood, setting a personal deadline of age 45 to conceive.

After multiple unsuccessful embryo transfers and the sudden death of her sister Ayelet, Niva paused treatments but later resumed. Her final embryo transfer succeeded, and she gave birth to her daughter Mika at nearly 45. Her parents initially reacted coolly to the pregnancy but later embraced their first grandchild before passing away two years later. Niva’s brother, who had been in long-term care, died in June 2023, leaving her without immediate family.

Aware of her unique family situation, Niva prepared a will, power of attorney, and appointed a trusted married friend as guardian for Mika, ensuring her daughter’s care if needed. She openly discusses loss and future plans with Mika, emphasizing her commitment to a long, healthy life together. Niva concludes that when life’s path falters, one must stop, understand the reasons, and courageously choose a new direction.
