Trump Threatens Strong Retaliation Against Iran Following Attacks in Jordan and Egypt

Following an Iranian missile attack on a U.S. base in Jordan and a drone strike on an American-owned tanker in Egypt's Damietta port, U.S. President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to Iran. Speaking at the White House on Wednesday evening, Trump said, "They know we are going to strike today, it's our turn. We will hit them hard - they asked us not to do it." He added, "We'll see if we reach an agreement," referring to ongoing diplomatic efforts.

The explosion in Damietta, confirmed by British maritime security firm Ambrey to have been caused by a drone strike, involved American-owned vessels. Egyptian authorities, including a security source and the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, reported no casualties and said an investigation is underway. It remains unclear if the attack was deliberate, though Iranian state TV recently broadcast a map highlighting potential Middle Eastern targets for retaliation, including Damietta port.

The missile attack on the U.S. base in Jordan occurred overnight. According to Israeli news outlet Channel 12, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff expressed frustration and anger in talks with mediating countries, noting surprise at the Iranian aggression as the U.S. had expected Iran to pursue a deal. A senior official from one of the mediating countries indicated that Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian was reportedly surprised by the missile strike, suggesting that hardliners within the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps are undermining diplomatic efforts and controlling policy decisions.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attacks so far. The developments underscore escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran amid fragile negotiations and recent retaliatory actions in the region.
