Israeli Electricity Company and Police Uncover $900,000 Electricity Theft in Negev Operation

A large-scale joint operation by the Israel Electric Corporation and the Israeli Police uncovered illegal electricity connections worth over 3 million shekels (approximately $900,000) in the Negev towns of Rahat and Tarabin. The crackdown took place on Wednesday as part of ongoing efforts to combat electricity theft, which severely damages infrastructure and disrupts regular power supply to local residents.

About 50 employees from the Israel Electric Corporation, accompanied by police officers, Border Police fighters, and a police helicopter, conducted the operation starting early morning. Using heavy engineering equipment including tractors and lifting platforms, they raided multiple sites, disconnecting ten major illegal connections immediately and addressing serious safety hazards found on site.

Residents of Rahat have experienced frequent power outages in recent months, partly due to the overload on the electricity grid caused by widespread theft. These unauthorized connections not only strain the network but also pose risks of fires and electrocution. The Israel Electric Corporation emphasized its commitment to continue working closely with law enforcement to eradicate this dangerous phenomenon, ensure public safety, and maintain stable electricity supply.

Following the operation, criminal proceedings and civil damage claims will be initiated against those involved in the theft, reflecting the severe impact on state infrastructure. The police and the electricity company stressed that the enforcement actions are part of a determined campaign to restore order and protect essential services in the region.
