Israel Sets Ultimatum Ahead of Lebanon Talks: No Further Security Zone Withdrawals

As Israel and Lebanon prepare for a new round of negotiations next week in Rome, Israel is taking a firm stance, declaring it will not withdraw from additional areas within the security zone. Israeli officials emphasize that without Lebanon agreeing to Israel's security demands, there will be no progress in expanding the current pilot arrangement. The core dispute centers on Israel's insistence that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) maintain full operational freedom even after any temporary withdrawal. Israel demands the ability to return to any area it vacates to ensure it is cleared of Hezbollah infrastructure and operatives before declaring it safe. Lebanon opposes this condition, and Israel has made clear that without agreement on this point, discussions about expanding the pilot are moot.

Additionally, Israel has drawn a red line stating that even if the pilot is expanded in the future, there will be no withdrawal from areas within the security zone along the so-called "yellow line." Israeli officials stress that the defensive lines established are non-negotiable. A senior Israeli source said, "The additional areas will not be on our side, within the defense lines we have set. If the current pilot succeeds and more pilot areas are decided later, they will be beyond the yellow line. We will not allow further withdrawals from our side of the zone. Until Hezbollah is disarmed in Lebanon, this is the agreement."

Despite this firm position, sources familiar with the talks note that ongoing political developments and U.S. involvement could influence the negotiations, potentially leading to changes in the framework or compromises by Israel.
