TikTok Tightens Political Content Rules Ahead of Israel Elections
As Israel approaches its elections, TikTok is enforcing stricter regulations on political content to combat misinformation and manipulation. The platform will ban paid political advertising, prohibiting parties, politicians, and government bodies from using TikTok's advertising tools or paying content creators to promote candidates, parties, or political messages. An exception is made for official election authorities, who may share essential voting information such as registration and voting procedures.
TikTok also requires clear labeling of realistic AI-generated or altered content. However, this labeling does not protect harmful AI content, including videos falsely showing public figures endorsing political positions or subjected to harassment, which will be removed regardless of labeling. During the election period, especially amid unfolding events, unverifiable content may be flagged, excluded from the "For You" feed recommendations, or displayed with warning messages before sharing.
The company collaborates with over 20 fact-checking organizations worldwide and uses Reuters news agency to verify content accuracy and enforce its policies in Israel. These measures aim to maintain content reliability on the platform during the critical election season.
