Canada Hosts Its First-Ever World Cup Match as 2026 Tournament Opens in North America
Canada marked a historic first by staging its opening World Cup 2026 match at home, one day after Mexico launched the tournament with a 2-0 win over South Africa. The Canadian side met Bosnia and Herzegovina and was aiming to collect its first-ever points in a World Cup match.

Bosnia and Herzegovina reached the tournament by shocking Italy in the qualification playoff, doing so with a disciplined defense. It is only Bosnia’s second World Cup as an independent nation. Its previous appearance came in 2014, when it recorded its only World Cup victory, a 3-1 win over Iran.
