Jewish Teen Detained After Defending Friends From Arab Motorcyclist Attack in Jerusalem

A 16-year-old Jewish minor has been held in custody for about a week following an incident in Jerusalem where an Arab motorcyclist allegedly attacked a group of Jewish teenagers returning from the traditional "Sivuv HaSha'arim" event in the month of Av. According to the minor's family and his lawyer, the teen was trying to protect his friends when he was arrested, while the Arab motorcyclist who initiated the attack was not detained.

The family claims there is clear video evidence showing the teen acted in self-defense and accuses the police of selective enforcement, arguing that in similar violent incidents only Jewish suspects are arrested, while Arab suspects are released. The minor's attorney, Daniel Shmashvili from the Honenu organization, stated that the footage contradicts the police's version and that they are fighting legally for the teen's release. He also called on authorities to act impartially and to hold the actual attackers accountable.

The Israel Police responded by affirming that their investigation is professional, impartial, and based on facts and evidence. They said the suspect was arrested due to his central involvement in a serious violent attack and that full footage of the event is in the investigators' possession. The police rejected claims of biased investigation and emphasized their commitment to uncovering the truth and prosecuting all involved, regardless of identity. A further court hearing regarding the minor's detention is scheduled for today, where his release may be considered.
