Tiberias Football Club Threatens Legal Action Over Football Association Spokesman’s Comments

Tiberias Football Club has sent a formal warning letter to the Israeli Football Association (IFA) ahead of potential legal proceedings, objecting to statements made by the IFA spokesman, Shlomi Barzel. The dispute centers on Barzel’s remarks regarding a disciplinary process initiated against the club. Tiberias denies the allegations attributed to it and insists it will defend itself vigorously in court. In a statement attached to the letter, Tiberias criticized Barzel for abandoning his role as a neutral spokesperson and instead acting as a judge and commentator. They condemned his harsh language, including comparing the club to a "criminal organization" and likening it to a "fish caught in a net struggling to escape." Barzel also referenced severe penalties such as a 14-point deduction, transfer bans, and a seven-year suspension of an official, expressing support for even harsher sanctions.

The club alleges Barzel’s comments were one-sided, misleading, and omitted the club’s perspective, violating principles of fairness and neutrality. They expressed concern that Barzel’s statements might reflect the official stance of the IFA and its disciplinary tribunal, potentially compromising the fairness of the ongoing proceedings. Tiberias demanded that the IFA clarify whether Barzel’s remarks represent its position, issue a public statement affirming the club’s innocence, and instruct Barzel to retract his comments explicitly.
