Netanyahu Meets Trump in Washington Amid US-Iran Talks and Regional Security Concerns

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrived in Washington overnight between July 27 and 28 for his seventh visit to the US capital since Donald Trump’s return to the White House in January last year. This will mark the eighth meeting between Netanyahu and Trump, including Trump’s brief visit to Israel last October for the release of hostages. Netanyahu is the world leader who has met Trump most frequently during his current term.

Netanyahu’s meeting with Trump is scheduled for 11:00 AM Washington time (6:00 PM Israel time) on July 28. Later that day, Netanyahu will attend the funeral of Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a prominent supporter of Israel. Additional meetings are expected on July 29 before Netanyahu returns to Israel on July 30. The visit comes amid reports of strained relations between the two leaders, including rumors of Trump disparaging Netanyahu, but the prime minister aims to demonstrate strong ties with the US president.

The central topic of discussion will be Iran. Netanyahu will present updated intelligence on Iran’s efforts to rebuild its nuclear and ballistic missile capabilities, including attempts to hide assets deep underground at "Mount Machoach" to protect them from bunker-busting bombs. This visit coincides with the US temporarily halting strikes on Iran, while Trump has publicly stated that the US is engaged in "good talks" with Tehran but maintains a shared stance with Israel on Iran’s threat. Netanyahu seeks to ensure that the Iranian regime does not recover economically or militarily and emphasizes the ultimate goal of regime change.

Other issues on the agenda include Saudi Arabia’s civilian nuclear program and expanding the Abraham Accords, though Saudi Arabia prefers to delay diplomatic moves until after Israel’s elections. Lebanon is also a key topic, following a recent positive meeting between Trump and Lebanese President Michel Aoun. The US is interested in expanding a pilot program involving the Lebanese army in southern Lebanon, but Israel insists on maintaining a security zone due to Hezbollah’s presence.

Netanyahu’s flight to Washington was conducted discreetly from Nevatim Airbase, avoiding Ben Gurion Airport, and flew over Italy and France despite an arrest warrant against him, with the route coordinated for security reasons. No press conference is planned after the Trump meeting, reflecting the confidential nature of their talks. Netanyahu stated before departure that he would discuss all key issues with Trump, especially Iran, aiming to protect Israel’s security and expand peace in the region through both determination and wisdom.
