Argentine President Milei Sparks Diplomatic Crisis with Brazil Over Lula Insults

Argentine President Javier Milei ignited a serious diplomatic conflict with Brazil over the weekend during a visit to São Paulo. At a political rally supporting Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who is running for Brazil's presidency in October, Milei harshly attacked Brazil's leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Without naming him directly, Milei called Lula a "thief" and "criminal," referencing past corruption convictions that were later overturned. He also criticized Brazil's Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, labeling him "trash" after being denied a meeting with former President Jair Bolsonaro, who is serving a 27-year prison sentence for a failed coup attempt and is barred from running in the upcoming election.

Milei expressed strong support for Flávio Bolsonaro, claiming he is the only candidate capable of "stopping Lula," despite polls showing Lula's growing lead. The Brazilian government responded by recalling its ambassador from Argentina, condemning Milei's remarks as insults to Brazil's institutions, people, and democracy. Brazil's Supreme Court President Edson Fachin also denounced Milei's disrespectful comments made on Brazilian soil.

Lula himself has not directly responded to Milei's attacks but published an op-ed in The Washington Post criticizing U.S. President Donald Trump's recent 25% tariffs on Brazilian goods as a "strategic mistake," emphasizing Brazil's sovereignty. This came shortly after Brazil refused visas to two U.S. State Department officials without explanation.

Within Argentina, Milei faced sharp criticism from political rivals. Former President Alberto Fernández condemned Milei's behavior as "unforgivable," accusing him of insulting a sister nation and its president. Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof, a potential presidential candidate, also rebuked Milei, stating he does not represent the Argentine people's sentiments and warning that Milei's provocations jeopardize trade, investments, and jobs to support Bolsonaro under Trump's influence.

Milei is known for his blunt style and has previously caused diplomatic tensions, including a 2024 incident in Spain where he insulted the Spanish Prime Minister's wife, leading to Spain recalling its ambassador. The current crisis marks another episode in Milei's controversial foreign engagements.
