Argentine President Accuses Brazil of Funding Anti-Argentina World Cup Campaign

Argentine President Javier Milei has accused the Brazilian government of financing a social media campaign against Argentina during the 2026 World Cup. Milei claimed that 25% of the campaign's resources came from Brazil, with additional funding from Mexico and the Democratic Party in the United States. The controversy escalated after Milei attended a support event for Flavio Bolsonaro, son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, where he harshly criticized Brazil's current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, accusing him of theft, spreading socialism, and leading the country into economic crisis. Milei also insulted Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, calling him "trash" after being denied a visit to the imprisoned Jair Bolsonaro, who is held on charges related to an attempted coup.

Milei's outburst in São Paulo, described by Brazilian officials as "screaming like a madman," prompted Brazil's Foreign Ministry to summon the Argentine ambassador for a reprimand, sparking a diplomatic incident. Argentine politicians, including the Governor of Buenos Aires, condemned Milei's remarks, stating he does not represent the Argentine people's sentiments and that his statements harm the country's dignity and economic ties with Brazil.

In a subsequent interview, Milei defended his accusations, asserting that the anti-Argentina campaign aimed to undermine Argentina's role as a "symbol of freedom" and to challenge corrupt leadership. He concluded that Argentina is becoming a "beacon of the West," which has triggered the media attacks and political pressure from other nations.
