Israeli Study Finds Skin Contact with Allergens Rarely Triggers Severe Reactions in Children
A recent Israeli study published in Acta Paediatrica provides reassuring evidence that accidental skin contact with food allergens does not cause anaphylaxis in children with food allergies. Conducted at Meir Medical Center and Schneider Children's Medical Center from July 2021 to July 2025, the prospective study involved 293 children aged one to 18, including 182 with confirmed food allergies and 101 controls. Researchers applied patch tests containing common allergens such as cow's milk, egg, peanuts, and sesame to intact skin for 15 minutes and monitored for allergic reactions.
Results showed that 83.7% of tests in allergic children produced no reaction, 15.2% caused only mild localized redness or swelling, and just 1.1% triggered a broader but still limited skin response. None of the children experienced systemic reactions or anaphylaxis. Cow's milk was the allergen most likely to cause a skin reaction, possibly due to its protein composition and liquid form facilitating skin penetration. Younger age significantly increased the risk of skin reactions, with children under three years old showing higher sensitivity.
Dr. Idit Lachover-Rot, head of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Rambam Health Care Campus and lead author, emphasized that the study addresses parental anxiety about accidental allergen skin exposure. She noted, "The risk of a significant allergic reaction from skin contact with allergens is very low, allowing families to reduce undue fear while maintaining standard medical precautions."
The study did not assess exposure to broken or scratched skin, mucous membranes, or large skin areas, which may carry different risks. Eating allergenic foods remains dangerous, and carrying epinephrine auto-injectors is still essential. The findings support incorporating patch testing into allergy evaluations, especially for young children allergic to cow's milk, to better guide clinical advice and reduce family stress.
