Israeli Study Finds No Risk of Anaphylaxis from Allergic Food Contact on Intact Skin in Children
A comprehensive Israeli study involving 192 children with confirmed food allergies found that brief contact of allergenic foods with intact skin did not trigger any cases of anaphylaxis or severe systemic allergic reactions. Conducted under medical supervision, the study exposed the skin on the children's arms to common allergens such as cow's milk, eggs, sesame, peanuts, tree nuts, and almonds for 15 minutes. In 84% of exposures, no reaction occurred, while about 15% showed only mild local symptoms like redness or swelling. Only three children experienced slightly more extensive skin reactions, which resolved after antihistamine treatment, with no systemic involvement.
Led by Dr. Idit Lachover-Rot, head of the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Unit at Rambam Medical Center, and carried out at Meir Medical Center and Schneider Children's Medical Center, this is one of the largest prospective studies examining skin exposure to allergenic foods under controlled conditions. The researchers noted that younger children and those allergic to milk had a slightly higher incidence of mild local skin reactions, but no anaphylaxis was observed in any group.
Dr. Lachover-Rot emphasized that the study addresses a common parental fear that even accidental skin contact with allergenic foods could provoke life-threatening reactions. She stated, "Our findings show that the risk is extremely low to negligible when allergenic foods contact intact skin, allowing us to provide evidence-based reassurance to families." However, the researchers stressed that these results do not change existing safety guidelines: children with food allergies must still avoid ingestion of allergens, carry epinephrine auto-injectors if prescribed, and prevent oral exposure.
The study did not assess contact with broken skin or mucous membranes, so risks in those scenarios remain unknown. The researchers concluded that reducing anxiety about accidental skin contact could improve quality of life for affected children and their families, as long as standard medical precautions continue to be followed.
