Israeli Study Finds Skin Contact with Food Allergens Rarely Triggers Severe Reactions in Children
A recent Israeli study led by Dr. Idith Lachover-Rot from Rambam Hospital investigated whether skin contact with food allergens causes severe allergic reactions in children diagnosed with food allergies. The research involved 182 children aged one to 18, all with confirmed food allergies, excluding those with a history of very severe allergic reactions or multiple epinephrine doses. Over 263 controlled exposures, small amounts of allergens such as milk, eggs, sesame, peanuts, and nuts were applied to intact skin for 15 minutes.
Results showed that nearly 84% of exposures caused no reaction, about 15% triggered mild localized skin responses, and only 1% had more extensive but still limited skin reactions. Importantly, no child developed systemic symptoms or anaphylaxis. Younger children and those with impaired skin barriers were more prone to mild skin reactions, but the type of allergen itself was not a significant risk factor. Even children who previously reported skin reactions to allergens mostly showed no or mild responses during the study.
The study highlights that accidental skin contact with small allergen amounts on intact skin poses a very low risk of severe allergic reactions. However, it did not include children with a history of severe reactions or test exposure to larger skin areas, broken skin, or mucous membranes, which could increase risk. Therefore, the findings do not justify allowing allergens in public or educational settings but may help reduce parental anxiety about incidental skin contact.
Dr. Lachover-Rot emphasized that families should continue to follow medical guidelines, including avoiding allergen ingestion and carrying epinephrine injectors. The research also underscores the emotional burden families face due to constant vigilance and the need for public awareness and accommodation. While food allergies appear to be increasing, the reasons remain unclear, and early introduction of allergenic foods may help prevent allergies.
This study provides evidence-based reassurance that skin contact with allergens is unlikely to cause dangerous reactions in most allergic children under controlled conditions, but caution and preventive measures remain essential.
