Israeli Poker Champion Gal Yifrah Detained at Los Angeles Airport Amid Legal Troubles

Gal Yifrah, a prominent Israeli professional poker player and former World Series of Poker (WSOP) champion, was detained on July 20 at Los Angeles International Airport by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He is currently held at the ICE detention center in Adelanto, Southern California. The exact reasons for his arrest, his flight origin, and the impact of his residency status on his detention remain unclear.

Yifrah, who has earned over $2.9 million in live tournament winnings, has a pending federal indictment from 2022 involving serious charges of running an illegal gambling business and money laundering. Authorities allege that between 2018 and 2022, he operated illegal gambling activities centered on slot machines and laundered large sums by converting illicit cash into casino chips at the Bell Gardens casino in California, then cashing out official casino checks deposited into his bank accounts to purchase real estate and other assets.

Despite the ongoing legal case, Yifrah was not detained during the past four years and continued to compete successfully in high-stakes poker tournaments worldwide. His career highlights include winning the WSOP bracelet in 2018 with a prize of approximately $462,000 and a major victory in 2025 at the PokerStars NAPT main event in Nevada, earning around $543,000 shortly after his 39th birthday.
