North American Jewish Educators Launch New Zionist Education Program in Israel
Twelve Jewish educators from leading schools across the United States and Canada arrived in Israel earlier this month as the inaugural cohort of a new fellowship program by the Zionist Education Initiative (ZEI) of Nefesh B'Nefesh. The program aims to transform how Israeli history and Zionism are taught in Jewish diaspora schools. It included five days of theoretical learning and visits to historical, cultural, and educational sites throughout Israel.
Since its establishment in 2021, Nefesh B'Nefesh's Zionist Education Initiative has hosted over 50,000 youth in Israel through service years, seminars, and other programs. Recently, the initiative developed a specialized Zionism curriculum for Jewish high schools abroad, piloted successfully in more than ten North American schools. In partnership with Koren Publishers, the organization is preparing the first-ever Zionism textbook for diaspora high school students. The current fellowship group, representing 12 high schools from New York, New Jersey, Florida, Texas, Maryland, Washington, and Toronto, will begin implementing this curriculum in their classrooms this fall.
During their week-long training, fellows toured the National Library of Israel, the Bible Lands Museum, and the City of David, engaging with primary historical sources and archaeological foundations of the Jewish connection to Israel. They also participated in workshops focused on curriculum design and student-centered learning, guided by historians, archaeologists, and education experts. Rabbi Josh Spodek, director of the Zionist Education Initiative, emphasized the program's goal to impact thousands of students by empowering exceptional educators with immersive experiences in Israel.
The fellowship, conducted in collaboration with Kadima Coaching and Unpacked for Educators, extends beyond the summer visit with monthly learning sessions, personal mentoring, and curriculum development. It will culminate in a "Learning Celebration" event in New York where fellows will present their educational innovations to community leaders and educators across North America. Kadima Coaching CEO Tikva Weiner highlighted the program's importance amid growing challenges faced by young Jews regarding Israel and Jewish identity, aiming to equip educators with knowledge and confidence to teach deeply and effectively.
The initiative underscores that teaching Israeli heritage and Zionism is not merely about information transfer but helping students understand their Jewish identity, history, and purpose. By strengthening educators at the core of this mission, the program seeks lasting influence in classrooms and Jewish communities throughout North America. Notable participants include educators from Yeshiva University High School for Boys, David Posnack Jewish Day School, The Frisch School, Yeshivah of Flatbush, Katz Yeshiva High School of South Florida, North Shore Hebrew Academy High School, Ramaz School, TanenbaumCHAT, SAR High School, Northwest Yeshiva High School, Akiba Yavneh Academy, and Yeshiva of Greater Washington.
Nefesh B'Nefesh, active since 2002 in partnership with the Ministry of Aliyah and Integration, the Jewish Agency for Israel, KKL, and JNF-USA, has helped nearly 100,000 North American immigrants integrate into Israeli society, maintaining a retention rate of about 90%.
