Israeli Ministers Demand Tougher Response to West Bank Terror and Changes to Rules of Engagement

In a government meeting on Sunday addressing recent terror incidents in the West Bank, several Israeli ministers called for a harsher response to terrorism and revisions to the military's rules of engagement. Defense Minister Israel Katz detailed ongoing IDF operations in the area, stating, "We have conducted operations in refugee camps and will likely need to do more. The IDF is operating decisively, conducting arrests and combing the area."

Minister Yoav Kisch emphasized the need to change the rules of engagement, while National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir urged a return to targeted killings and allowing soldiers to open fire in such events. Ben-Gvir reiterated his stance despite recent legal challenges against him, asserting that the policy should prioritize soldier safety even at the cost of many terrorists' lives.

Deputy Defense Comptroller Brigadier General Yogev Bar Sheshet highlighted operational difficulties in distinguishing terrorists from civilians during clashes. Other ministers, including Nir Barkat and Ze'ev Elkin, advocated for graduated and stricter responses, with Barkat suggesting warning shots before live fire and Elkin calling for a tougher reaction. Deputy Minister Almog Cohen supported a disproportionate response. Minister Amichai Shikli demanded that the Central Command chief revise the rules of engagement accordingly.
