IDF Warns Defense Minister Katz of Imminent Large-Scale Escalation in West Bank Due to Rising Jewish Terrorism
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) presented an unusual strategic warning this week to Defense Minister Israel Katz, indicating that the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) faces a significant risk of widespread escalation. This alert was prompted by a sharp increase in Jewish extremist attacks and the authorities' ineffective response to the phenomenon. The warning was delivered on Sunday during a high-level meeting attended by the IDF Chief of Staff, Central Command commander, head of operations, and the government coordinator for West Bank activities, but it was not included in the public statement issued afterward.
During the discussion, IDF representatives described Jewish terrorism as a primary destabilizing factor, emphasizing that illegal actions in Palestinian villages are eroding Palestinian public apathy and fueling incitement against Israelis, security forces, and the state. They cautioned that these developments could trigger a gradual escalation with far-reaching security consequences for Israel. The IDF stressed that without immediate multi-agency intervention to control the situation, there is a significant risk of an imminent outbreak of violence.
The military officials also highlighted the rising number of incidents: 682 Jewish terror events occurred in 2024, increasing to 867 in 2025, with 636 incidents already recorded in the first half of 2026. In 2025, 41 Palestinians were injured in these attacks, while in 2026, four Palestinians have been killed and 60 injured so far. The meeting was convened following recent events in the village of Kusra and amid IDF warnings about losing control in the area.
IDF representatives criticized public discourse, pointing to the silence or even support from some elected officials for unauthorized entry into Palestinian-controlled Areas A and B, which exacerbates tensions. The army also warned that the surge in Jewish terrorism is forcing it to allocate increasing forces to address the threat, detracting from other operational priorities. For example, last week a Golani Brigade battalion was deployed to Kusra, interrupting its training.
Defense Minister Katz’s public statement after the meeting did not mention the escalation warning. He affirmed that violence and vigilantism by unauthorized groups would not be tolerated and acknowledged the severe law violations by a small minority of Jewish settlers, which compel the IDF to dedicate more resources to the issue. Katz emphasized that civilian law enforcement in the West Bank should be handled by the Israeli Police with coordinated support from the military. It was agreed that the IDF would submit a comprehensive plan within two weeks, to be coordinated with the police and subject to military authority in the area.
