Rabbi Kirshenboim Warns Against Spiritual Complacency and Reliance on Isolation Walls in Haredi Community
In a powerful speech ahead of Tisha B'Av, Rabbi Avraham Moshe Kirshenboim, head of the Nachalat HaLeviim Yeshiva in Haifa, sharply criticized the spiritual complacency within the Haredi community. He warned that the community's reliance on isolation walls to separate themselves from secular society, especially from the Religious Zionist youth, poses a severe spiritual danger. Rabbi Kirshenboim emphasized that building walls without cultivating strong personal religious identity inside them leads to vulnerability and decline.
Rabbi Kirshenboim praised the recent summer learning sessions at his yeshiva but lamented the lack of genuine spiritual awakening and responsibility among the youth. He highlighted the ongoing deterioration in prayer, music, and sports, and the failure to confront ideological challenges, particularly the disputes with the Religious Zionist sector amid the current war and the draft law crisis.
Drawing a historical parallel to the destruction of Jerusalem's walls on the 17th of Tammuz, he explained that the catastrophe was not just the breach itself but the blind dependence on the walls without internal preparedness. He compared this to Israel's current security situation, where reliance on physical barriers leads to complacency while enemies exploit every weakness.
Rabbi Kirshenboim also criticized the practice of isolating the Haredi community from the broader public, warning that this creates a "sleeping herd" rather than strong Torah personalities. He stressed that walls are only a starting point and not a substitute for personal growth and spiritual resilience.
In a striking statement, he advised young Haredi men to avoid contact with Religious Zionist youth, arguing that even brief encounters can lead to confusion and spiritual damage due to the lack of solid foundations behind the community's walls. He concluded by underscoring that education based solely on walls causes panic when breaches occur, as there is no internal strength to withstand outside influences.
