Leading Torah Authority Urges Yeshiva Students to Overcome Challenges and Strengthen Devotion

At a special preparatory event in Bnei Brak organized by the 'Dirshu' organization for approximately 4,000 young yeshiva students advancing from smaller to larger yeshivas, Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch, a prominent Torah leader and head of a yeshiva, delivered a passionate and practical guidance speech. He emphasized the critical importance of this transitional period as the foundation for lifelong spiritual growth, urging students to maintain consistent Torah study, prayer, good character traits, and strict observance of Jewish law.

Rabbi Hirsch warned about new challenges these students face, including a sense of freedom from parental and institutional supervision, which can lead to temptation. He recounted an example of a strong American Hasidic student who once went to a movie but later became a respected educator, illustrating the danger of feeling "free". He stressed that this feeling of freedom is a manifestation of the evil inclination and must be overcome.

He also cautioned against arrogance, reminding students they must continue to heed the guidance of yeshiva heads and supervisors. Rabbi Hirsch encouraged students to shed any self-limiting beliefs about their abilities, explaining that even those who were average in smaller yeshivas can excel in larger ones, and those who excelled must adapt to the greater demands.

The rabbi called for high aspirations to master all Torah knowledge, fully observe commandments, and excel in interpersonal conduct. He quoted the Chafetz Chaim and Rabbi Aharon Kotler on the sweetness and fulfillment found in accepting the yoke of Torah study, even when immediate enjoyment is lacking. He advised students to balance their efforts with their personal physical needs, such as adequate sleep, and to persist even when motivation wanes.

Concluding, Rabbi Hirsch addressed the current societal challenges, including conscription decrees against Torah scholars. He affirmed that the proper response is intensified Torah study, meticulous observance, and attachment to God. He expressed confidence that divine assistance will enable students to reach the highest spiritual levels, bring honor to heaven, and hasten the ultimate redemption.
