Rabbi Yitzhak Azrieli Warns Haredi Community to Prepare for Possible Existential Struggle
Rabbi Yitzhak Azrieli, head of the Mir Yeshiva and member of the Council of Torah Sages of Degel HaTorah, addressed hundreds of students at the Ner Zerach Yeshiva in Otzem, warning of potential severe measures against the Haredi community. He urged his students to prepare for extreme scenarios that could require true self-sacrifice to preserve Torah study and the community's way of life.
In his speech, Rabbi Azrieli emphasized that the desire to fight for their positions is insufficient without deep internal purification. He shared that he has long warned of harsh decrees possibly targeting the yeshiva world, demanding learners to sacrifice comfort and status. While students have expressed readiness to pay the price, he cautioned that mere verbal willingness does not guarantee actual capability, especially if one harbors negative traits like jealousy or hatred.
To illustrate his point, Rabbi Azrieli referenced a historical analysis based on the "Meshech Chochma" commentary on King Hezekiah's leadership, explaining that the ability to relinquish material and personal assets for a higher value is a gradual process of internal refinement and mental resilience. He stressed that self-absorption and indulgence in base desires undermine true readiness for sacrifice.
Concluding, Rabbi Azrieli clarified that the community does not seek confrontation or extreme conflict, but if circumstances force an open struggle, the youth must be fully prepared and worthy. "If we reach such a situation, we must go all the way," he said, adding that the ability to do so depends solely on each individual's moral and spiritual improvement.
