Israeli Startup Elio Raises $21 Million to Develop Advanced AI Vision Sensors

Israeli startup Elio has secured $21 million in a Series A funding round led by venture capital firms Innovation Endeavors and Xora, with participation from Kevin Weil and Scribble VC. Existing investors UpWest and Resolute Ventures also joined the round, bringing Elio's total capital raised to $29 million since its founding in 2022.

Elio develops innovative optical sensors designed to enhance artificial intelligence systems by enabling them to decide in real time what visual information to capture and analyze. Unlike conventional cameras that capture fixed images for later processing, Elio's technology integrates dynamic micro-mirror layers within the optical system to process light before it reaches the sensor. This approach allows AI to extract physical characteristics of objects and materials beyond pixel-based imaging.

The company envisions applications across microscopy, semiconductor manufacturing, robotics, and security. For example, in microscopy, Elio's sensors can monitor live cell responses to drugs without staining or fixing samples. In semiconductor production, they help detect defects beneath silicon layers. In robotics, the sensors adapt sensing types to environmental conditions, and in security, they assist in identifying drones under limited visibility.

Elio was founded by Nadav Grossinger and Nitai Romano, former Meta engineers who previously developed sensing systems for augmented and virtual reality products. Grossinger also co-founded ColoRight, acquired by L’Oréal, while Romano served as chief optical scientist at Holo/Or. The company operates teams in Israel and California.

Grossinger emphasized the company's vision: "The competition for AI's future will not be won just by bigger models, but by what they can perceive from the world. We give AI its own eyes that can choose their information and discover what no one thought to look for."
