Israeli Startup Elio Raises $21 Million to Develop AI Vision Sensors

Israeli startup Elio has secured $21 million in a Series A funding round, led by venture capital firms Innovation Endeavors and Xora, with participation from Kevin Weil, Scribble VC, UpWest, and Resolute Ventures. This latest investment brings Elio's total funding to $29 million since its founding in 2022. The company develops advanced optical sensors designed to enhance artificial intelligence systems by enabling real-time decisions about what visual data to capture and analyze.

Unlike conventional cameras that capture fixed-format images for later processing, Elio's technology integrates dynamic micro-mirror layers within the optical system to process light before it reaches the sensor. This allows AI algorithms to selectively gather relevant information based on the task at hand, extracting data beyond standard pixel-based images, such as identifying objects and materials through their physical properties. The sensors are adaptable for multiple uses and can be updated even after integration into devices.

Elio targets applications in microscopy, semiconductor manufacturing, robotics, and security. In microscopy, their sensors can monitor live cell responses to drugs without staining or fixing samples. In chip production, they help detect defects beneath silicon layers. For robotics, the sensors adjust sensing modes to environmental conditions, and in security, they assist in identifying drones under limited visibility.

Co-founders Nadav Grossinger, CEO, and Nitai Romano, CTO, previously worked at Meta developing sensing systems for augmented and virtual reality products. They also founded Pebbles Interfaces, acquired by Meta, and bring extensive expertise in optical science and AI. Grossinger emphasized, "The competition for AI's future will not be decided just by bigger models, but by what they can perceive from the world. We give AI its own eyes that can choose their information and discover what no one thought to look for." Elio operates teams in Israel and California.
