Israeli Teen in Wheelchair Fulfills Dream Visiting Ashdod Beach Through Special Family Program

Nitai Maman, a 13-year-old boy from Yeruham who uses a wheelchair, experienced his first visit to the sea at Ashdod beach thanks to a special inclusive family hiking club organized by the Yeruham community center. The club, designed for families with children who have disabilities or special needs, takes 18 families on accessible monthly trips across Israel, allowing all members to enjoy nature and shared experiences. With dedicated support from guides, volunteers, and the lifeguard team at Oranim Beach, Nitai was able to explore the sand dunes, reach the waterline, and fully enjoy the beach for the first time in his life.

Nitai's mother, Bat-El Maman, emphasized that the program gave her son a strong sense of belonging, friendship, and shared joy, which was invaluable to the family. The families involved hope this unique model will be adopted in other communities across Israel to enable more children and families to enjoy nature and equal opportunities for outdoor activities.

Ariel Mashal, chairman of the board of the Association of Community Centers, explained that the hiking clubs were created to connect children with nature and their roots, often providing a first-time experience with the outdoors. He noted the excitement and joy these children feel makes all the effort worthwhile.
