MK Boaron Accuses Attorney General of Deliberate Obstruction in Disciplinary Probe Against Roee Kahlon

MK Avichai Boaron sharply criticized Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara following the recent renewal of the disciplinary investigation against attorney Roee Kahlon. Boaron claimed the probe is a deliberate attempt to block appointments by the right-wing government, targeting Kahlon’s potential senior public service roles. He described the investigation as part of a broader pattern by Baharav-Miara to sabotage right-wing government appointments, citing similar cases involving other nominees.

Boaron highlighted that when Kahlon was appointed acting State Service Commissioner, Baharav-Miara refused to defend the appointment in the Supreme Court. When it seemed the court might reject her position, a disciplinary investigation against Kahlon was opened but then frozen for over a year despite requests from investigators and Kahlon himself to conclude it. The State Complaints Commissioner, retired judge Menachem Finkelstein, criticized the Attorney General’s handling of the case, citing undue delay and recommending Kahlon consider petitioning the Supreme Court for relief due to prolonged legal process.

The investigation was recently resumed after a long freeze, coinciding with reports naming Kahlon as a leading candidate for head of the Police Internal Investigations Department. Boaron suggested the timing is suspicious and part of a pattern of blocking right-wing appointments. He warned that such conduct erodes public trust in Israel’s law enforcement system and called for Baharav-Miara’s immediate removal after the upcoming elections.

The Attorney General’s office rejected claims of intentional delay, stating the investigation proceeded continuously but was slowed by difficulties in appointing appropriate legal counsel for this sensitive case. After appointing an eighth counsel, investigative actions resumed, including taking testimonies and completing necessary inquiries. The disciplinary probe against Kahlon began about 18 months ago over allegations of inflating his resume following his appointment as acting State Service Commissioner.
