Moshe Saada Challenges Attorney General Over Police Investigation Unit Appointments During Election Period

Moshe Saada, the initiator of the Police Investigations Department (Mahash) reform, sharply criticized Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara on Thursday evening. The dispute centers on her request to the Supreme Court to block government appointments to key positions in the newly established Police Investigations Department during the election period. Baharav-Miara argued that advancing these appointments now could politicize law enforcement and intimidate police officers, investigators, and prosecutors. She also highlighted concerns that the Justice Minister influences three of the five members of the selection committee, potentially limiting the incoming government's discretion.

Saada countered that it is the Attorney General's conduct that instills fear, accusing her of unprecedented behavior, pressure, and threats that forced the Justice Ministry to conceal the identities of the selection committee members. He reaffirmed his commitment to pushing forward the Mahash reform law, which he claims will revolutionize law enforcement. Saada also warned that Baharav-Miara and her allies, whom he accuses of covering up the "Patzar affair" and persecuting right-wing activists, will be held accountable.

Concluding his remarks, Saada delivered a strong message against the Attorney General and the law enforcement system, stating, "The days of bowing our heads before the deep state are over." This confrontation highlights tensions between government officials and the Attorney General's office regarding the independence and politicization of police investigations during a sensitive electoral period.
