Israeli Defense Considers Boeing P-8 Poseidon Aircraft to Counter Turkish Submarine Threat

In recent months, Israel's defense establishment has proposed acquiring the Boeing P-8 Poseidon, a multi-mission maritime patrol aircraft primarily designed for submarine detection and neutralization. The P-8, operated by a nine-person crew and based on a converted civilian airliner, has a maritime operational range of approximately 2,200 kilometers and features aerial refueling capabilities. It is equipped with advanced maritime radar, acoustic sensors, electro-optical and infrared systems, and diesel submarine detection sensors. The aircraft can carry weapons against surface and underwater targets, including torpedoes and naval mines.

Currently, the Israeli Air Force operates the unique Oron aircraft, which provides multi-branch intelligence and reconnaissance capabilities in coordination with the Air Force, Navy, Military Intelligence Directorate, and Ministry of Defense. A defense source told Walla that Israel's current anti-submarine warfare capabilities are very advanced but noted the P-8's acquisition would entail a very high budget cost, especially at this time, unless procured as part of a broader diplomatic deal with the White House.

The consideration to purchase the P-8 is partly driven by concerns over escalating hostile rhetoric from senior Turkish officials against Israel, which could lead to increased tensions or confrontations. Past incidents include Turkish threats to escort a protest flotilla to Gaza with missile boats, which was averted through intense diplomatic pressure from Israel and the United States. Despite decades of close military cooperation and joint exercises between Israel and Turkey, relations have sharply deteriorated over the past 15 years.

Additionally, the strengthening of the Egyptian Navy's submarine capabilities and the Turkish Navy's status as one of the largest and most powerful in the Middle East and NATO contribute to Israel's strategic calculations. The Turkish fleet includes over ten active diesel-electric submarines, frigates, corvettes, fast missile boats, amphibious forces, and drone carriers, with ongoing expansion through foreign purchases and domestic production.
