Israeli Reservist Survives Deadly Gaza Building Collapse, Now Trains for Combat Comeback

On October 7, Dor Almog lost his best friend, Amit Magnazi, who was killed in the deadly Nova Festival massacre. Despite his grief, Dor insisted on joining the reserves and fought in Gaza until January 22, 2024, when a building collapsed in Al-Moazi during combat. Out of 22 soldiers trapped, Dor was the sole survivor, sustaining severe injuries.

Dor recalled declining Amit’s invitation to the festival due to an important exam, only to wake up to news of the massacre. Determined to act, he joined a new reserve unit fighting in Gaza, admiring the dedication of fellow soldiers who paused their lives to defend others. During the Al-Moazi operation, a massive explosion caused the building to collapse, killing 21 soldiers. Dor credited his MMA training for his survival, crawling out despite smoke and debris.

After being hospitalized and sedated for five days, Dor learned of his comrades’ deaths from his commander. This moment marked the start of his recovery journey, acknowledging he was given a second chance at life. In rehabilitation at Sheba Medical Center, Dor met Shagai Dovav, a former combat trainer who began coaching wounded soldiers to build resilience through martial arts.

Together, Dor and Shagai established a rigorous training routine at "House of Heroes" in Or Yehuda, where many injured fighters prepare for the upcoming "Gordon Fight Nights" event on July 27 at Menora Arena. The event, organized by Ahavat Hashem Gordon and his brother, will feature international fighters and highlight the courage of wounded soldiers. Dor sees stepping into the ring as a major victory and hopes their example inspires others facing hardships to persevere.
