Hapoel Katamon Jerusalem Can Clinch First Championship With Win Over Maccabi Tel Aviv
Hapoel Katamon Jerusalem is on the verge of securing its first-ever championship in the Israeli Women's Premier League. The team, known as the Reds, can clinch the title on Thursday at 16:50 in a live broadcast on 5PLUS by defeating Maccabi Tel Aviv. After finishing as runners-up to M.S. Kiryat Gat in their first three seasons, Katamon took a major step toward the championship last week by winning 1-0 against Kiryat Gat in what was dubbed the match of the season.
With four rounds remaining, Katamon leads the league with 62 points out of a possible 69, holding a nine-point advantage over Kiryat Gat, which has 53 points. Since the tiebreaker in the women's league is the number of wins (Katamon has 20, Kiryat Gat 16), a victory against Maccabi Tel Aviv will officially secure Katamon's first title. Meanwhile, Kiryat Gat faces Maccabi Holon and hopes for an upset in Ness Ziona.
If Kiryat Gat wins and Katamon draws, Kiryat Gat will still have a slim chance to overturn the lead by winning their remaining matches. The same applies if Katamon loses and Kiryat Gat draws. However, if Kiryat Gat loses, Katamon will clinch the championship regardless of their own result. Even a draw between the two teams will decide the championship in Katamon's favor.
Ahead of the match, Katamon stated, "We face a challenging and persistent opponent with a strong attacking line. Our goal is to play our football and win. The players know exactly what is required and are determined to close the matter today."
