Thousands Prepare to Gather at Western Wall for Tisha B'Av Observances

Ahead of Tisha B'Av, the national day of mourning commemorating the destruction of the First and Second Temples, the Western Wall Heritage Foundation has completed preparations for the expected arrival of thousands of worshippers at the Western Wall. Starting Wednesday evening through late Thursday night, visitors from across Israel will gather to recite the Book of Lamentations, chant dirges, and pray while sitting on the ground, following traditional customs that mark the day of mourning and reflect the Jewish people's historical connection to Jerusalem.

On the night of Tisha B'Av, the foundation will hold a special guided tour called "And in Jerusalem You Shall Be Comforted" for bereaved families who lost loved ones defending Jerusalem and the State of Israel. This tour will take place at the ruins near the Western Wall, linking the national tragedy of the Temple's destruction with personal stories of heroism and loss.

At 7:00 PM on Thursday, as the fast ends, thousands will participate in singing and unity circles on the Western Wall plaza. This annual event symbolizes the transition from mourning to consolation and will be broadcast live on the foundation's website and to dozens of locations in Israel and worldwide. To ensure safety and respect, thousands of personal kits containing drinks and light refreshments will be distributed to those concluding the fast at the plaza.

The foundation has urged the public to avoid arriving by private car due to restricted access to the Old City and to use public transportation instead. Visitors are also requested to comply with instructions from the Israel Police, security forces, and event marshals to maintain order during the large gatherings.
