Netherlands Bans Import and Sale of Products from Israeli Settlements in West Bank

The Dutch government announced on Tuesday that starting in September, it will prohibit the import, purchase, sale, and commercial brokerage of products originating from Israeli settlements in the West Bank. This decision follows a similar move by Belgium just two days earlier, which was made during Belgium's last government meeting before the summer recess. Belgium's action aligns it with other European countries taking steps against trade with the settlements, although the European Union has yet to reach a consensus on the matter.

Under the new Dutch decree, not only will importing such products be banned, but also their purchase, sale within the Netherlands, and any brokerage services facilitating their trade. However, reports from Ynet indicate that enforcing this decision will be challenging. Government officials, the Council of State, and critics have pointed out the difficulty in accurately identifying products originating from the settlements, especially agricultural goods that are part of broader supply chains. Consequently, enforcement is expected to be limited. Customs authorities are also likely to face difficulties in determining the exact origin of products due to time and resource constraints.
