Netherlands Joins Boycott on Israeli Settlements Including Golan Heights from September

Amid ongoing security tensions in the Middle East, the Netherlands has joined Spain, Belgium, and Ireland in imposing a comprehensive economic boycott on trade with Israeli settlements. Starting September 22, Dutch law will prohibit importing, selling, or purchasing products from all Israeli settlements beyond the Green Line, including those in the Golan Heights, the Jordan Valley, northern Dead Sea, and East Jerusalem. The Dutch Foreign Ministry cited Israel's failure to end the occupation despite the International Court of Justice ruling as the reason for the boycott, which targets agricultural products such as dates, tahini, and wine. Enforcement challenges are expected due to the ease of disguising product origins and the use of intermediary European countries like Germany, which does not restrict settlement trade.

Separately, the New York Times highlights Jordan's strategic role as a "land aircraft carrier" for the US in its conflict with Iran. Jordan hosts approximately 4,000 American troops and has recently been targeted by dozens of Iranian ballistic missiles and drones, including attacks near the Israeli border city of Aqaba. Despite these attacks, Jordan remains dependent on US military and economic support and is unable to limit American forces on its soil. The strikes have also hurt Jordan's tourism sector, which accounts for about 18% of its GDP.

In Germany, a 65-year-old man wearing an Israeli flag pin was violently attacked by a 20-year-old Syrian asylum seeker in Bavaria. The victim, active in the Germany-Israel Friendship Association, was hospitalized with spinal injuries but is in stable condition. Authorities suspect anti-Israel and antisemitic motives, which could increase the attacker’s sentence. The incident reflects a sharp rise in antisemitic attacks in Germany since October 7, 2023.
