Windows 11 Introduces Free Built-In Tools for Screenshots, File Extraction, and Live Captions

Windows 11 now offers several built-in, free tools that replace previously necessary paid third-party applications. These include an advanced Snipping Tool for screenshots, enhanced file extraction capabilities, and live captions for audio transcription without internet access.

The Snipping Tool allows users to capture screen sections, annotate them, and extract text from images using integrated OCR technology. While it lacks scrolling capture and direct cloud upload, it covers most daily needs effectively. Additionally, Windows 11’s File Explorer now natively supports extracting popular compressed file formats such as RAR, 7z, and TAR, eliminating the need for external software like WinRAR or 7-Zip. However, creating encrypted archives still requires third-party apps.

A notable new feature is the Live Captions tool, activated by Windows + Control + L, which provides accurate real-time transcription of any audio playing on the device. This function processes data locally after a one-time language pack download, ensuring privacy and offline usability.

Microsoft’s integration of these tools reduces reliance on external software, streamlines user experience, and saves money by offering essential functionalities directly within Windows 11.
