Microsoft Revamps Windows 11 Search to Remove Ads and Improve Accuracy
Microsoft announced a major upgrade to the Windows 11 search engine, removing advertisements and promotional content from the search interface. This update aims to make the search experience faster, more accurate, and simpler for users. Initially, the update is rolling out to Windows Insider users in the experimental channel, with a broader release planned for all Windows 11 users later this year.
The change comes after years of user complaints about the search interface displaying ads, product recommendations, trending searches, and Microsoft service content instead of focusing on the user's actual queries. The new home screen for search will primarily show the user's recent searches, eliminating marketing content and recommendations.
Microsoft is also reprioritizing search results so that apps, files, and settings stored locally on the computer will appear before web results or Microsoft Store listings. The updated system will better handle spelling errors, extra letters, and partial words to deliver the most relevant results even when searches are imprecise.
Additional improvements include clearer indication of each result's source, preview information, and file previews to help users quickly understand items before opening them. Users will also have the option to completely disable web and Microsoft Store search results via system settings.
According to Microsoft, the goal of this upgrade is to transform the Windows search engine into a reliable, fast, and clear tool that prioritizes user needs over promoted content. The update is currently being tested with beta users and is expected to reach all Windows 11 users later in the year.
