Magen David Adom Launches Mobile Mental Health Crisis Units in Central Israel

Magen David Adom (MDA) has introduced a new initiative to provide immediate mental health crisis intervention directly at patients' homes. This pilot program currently operates in the Central District, specifically in the Tel Aviv and Holon areas, with two dedicated mobile units staffed by specially trained paramedics and psychiatric nurses. These teams aim to stabilize individuals experiencing acute mental health crises, often preventing the need for hospital admission.

According to Professor Eli Yaffe, MDA's Community Deputy Director, the organization is expanding its emergency medical services beyond physical injuries and cardiac events to also address psychological emergencies. The mobile units are equipped with personnel who have undergone extensive mental health training, enabling them to respond effectively to psychiatric calls.

Initial identification of mental health emergencies occurs during calls to MDA's 101 emergency center, where a triage officer assesses and categorizes the situation. If there is an immediate danger to the patient or others, an ambulance or intensive care unit is dispatched alongside the mental health team. Additionally, a psychiatric nurse at the call center provides telephone support nationwide, including areas where the mobile units are not yet available.

This initiative reflects MDA's commitment to pre-hospital emergency care that encompasses both physical and mental health crises, aiming to offer timely and specialized support to those in need across Israel.
