German Teen Arrested for Planning Terror Attack on Synagogue After Self-Inflicted Explosion

German authorities have charged a 15-year-old boy from Augsburg, Bavaria, with planning a terrorist attack targeting a synagogue. The teenager, who expressed support for the Islamic State (ISIS), accumulated a large quantity of pyrotechnic materials intending to assemble explosive devices. The plot was uncovered after the boy accidentally detonated a homemade bomb at his home in late October 2025, severely injuring himself and cutting off two of his fingers, while a friend present sustained minor injuries.

Following the explosion, investigators found instructional materials and evidence indicating the boy's intention to attack Jewish institutions. The Munich public prosecutor's office filed serious charges including preparation of a violent act endangering state security, illegal possession of explosives, causing an explosion, and inflicting serious bodily harm. The investigation began in autumn 2025 after suspicions arose about his stockpiling of explosive materials.

The suspect remains in custody pending trial in the juvenile court. His defense lawyer emphasizes the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. This case emerges amid a troubling rise in extremist incidents and attempted attacks against Jewish communities across Germany and Europe. German security forces are intensifying protective measures for synagogues, schools, and community centers, particularly as youth radicalization through online hate and terror content grows.
